If you like diving with one (or two) backup lights, then the question may arise, how do I fix them on? On the one hand, the lamp should not interfere with the diving, but on the other, you should be able to reach it quickly if you need it. If you going with a wing, backplate and associated harness, then there is a very simple solution that I would like to introduce to you today:

You need:

All that you will need for this is a backup light (of course) and a backplate with a harness. Otherwise, you only need two things:

  • Bike tubing (about as wide as the webbing on your harness)
  • A pair of scissors

Step 1: Cut the bike tubing

Step 1: Cut the bike tubing

In the first step, cut a piece off the bike tubing, for which the width is up to you. I cut myself about 1cm thick pieces of tubing. Some divers use two thinner pieces. You can try to see which solution works best for you.

Step 2: Threading the bike tubing

Now thread the piece of bike tubing onto the harness of your backplate. You do not need to completely unthread the webbing! You can also thread the bike tubing around the lead stopper and through the holes in the black plate.

Step 3: Attach backup light

Step 3: Attach backup light

In order to fix the lamp on you now need to clip the bolt snap carabineer onto the chest D-rings. The light will now be parallel to the harness. The light head should be fixed to the bike tubing, as in the previous step.

You can see the end result in the picture above. The lamp is parallel to the harness during the dive and thus does not interfere. In the event that the backup lamp is required, you simply have to pull out of the tubing, switch it on, give your buddy a short signal, and then clip it off.

On my harness (waist strap) I always have two pieces of bike tubing as replacements. The tube tears from time to time and can be quickly and easily replaced.
